Day 30: How Has Harry Potter impacted Your Life? #30DaysHarryPotter

How Has Harry Potter Impacted Your Life?

As September draws to an end, so too does my 30 Days of Harry Potter challenge. It seems only fitting to bring it to a close with a reflection on how Harry Potter has impacted our lives. The first book in the series, Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone was published in June 1997 – that means the series celebrates its 20th birthday in a few months time! Yet we still talk about it almost every single day. From that small initial print run of just 500 copies, the series has turned into a multi-faceted industry with theme parks, movies and every type of merchandise imaginable!

Not only that, but it has impacted the lives of so many people around the world! It taught a generation to fall back in love with books. It taught us the value of love and friendship. It encouraged us to never give up and it encouraged us to believe in magic!

For me personally, Harry Potter has gotten me through some of the hardest times in my life. I was late to the series. I didn’t start reading them until I was 21 years old and by that time there were four books out and number 5 was just getting ready to be published. I feel like I really missed something. I feel like if I had been reading those books from the age of 15 I would really have gotten through some issues a great deal better than I did. That probably sounds silly, especially if you are not a Harry Potter fan, but it is true. Even beginning the series at age 21 I found Harry and Co getting me through some tough times. I am 35 now and Harry Potter is still my go to on a bad day. You will find me in bed with hot chocolate in a Harry Potter mug, wearing Harry Potter jammies and watching the movies back to back.My wardrobe and jewellery box are full of Harry Potter items. So is my planner. It has leaked into every single aspect of my life.

Harry Potter will be in my heart. Always.

Day 29: What Lesson Have You Learned From Harry Potter? #30DaysHarryPotter

What Lesson Have You Learned From Harry Potter?

Today’s prompt is probably something that most people probably haven’t really spent too much time thinking about. If you are anything like me then you are more concerned about reading and enjoying books than you are about the life lessons they have to impart so you are going to have to get your thinking caps on. I am cheating a little because I studied The Philosopher’s Stone during my literature degree so I have a bit of a head start here!

For me, one of the biggest things that Harry Potter has taught me is that friendship is incredibly important. Time and time again the Harry Potter series has shown us how in times of trouble we can always turn to our friends for support. How many times would Harry have died if he hadn’t had Hermione or Ron or another one of his friends to offer back up?  It is not even just about the main trio. As the books progress we see more and more of Harry’s friends lending their support such as Ginny, Neville and Luna. Do not underestimate the value of friendship. Try harder to keep in touch with a text, a letter, a phone call or an email to let your friends know that you are thinking of them. After all you never know when you need a helping hand to slay a Basilisk!1470479077_what-harry-potter-can-teach-us-about-friendship

Another thing that I think Harry Potter teaches is not to judge people based on where they come from. It wasn’t a personal lesson for me as I don’t think that this is something that I am guilty of doing, but I do see it as a great lesson for children reading the books. Over and over again it is demonstrated that judging wizards who are Muggleborn or even half blood as being lesser beings is the mark of a dark wizard. This is a great metaphor for racism. It was often demonstrated that muggleborns could be just as competent as pure blood wizards – just look at Hermione!

Finally, Harry Potter has taught me never to give up. Even in the darkest of times when you seem like you are a lone voice in the crowd you should always stick to your principals and keep on fighting. What would have happened if Harry had just given up when the Daily Prophet and the Ministry of Magic were telling everyone that he was a liar? Never be afraid to stand up for your beliefs and never give up on your dreams.

Day 28 – What is Your Favourite Creature From The Wizarding World? #30DaysHarryPotter

HPBannerWhat is Your Favourite Creature From The Harry Potter Series?

When I pulled up today’s prompt I didn’t even have to think about it! I knew instantly which magical creature I was going to choose! There are lots of them that I find interesting or adorable, but the one that I really love is the Thestrals!

Anyone who knows me knows that I love the things that are a little bit strange and unusual! I am attracted to the darker side of life and that is definitely where the Thestrals reside! They are dark skeletal horses with bat wings that can only be seen by those who have seen death – sort of like a Goth ‘My Little Pony’ which is something that I wished for as a little girl! Some people find them ugly, but to me they are beautiful!

One of my favourite scenes in the movies with the Thestrals is were Luna and Harry are bonding in ‘The Order of the Phoenix’ while Luna feeds the Thestrals. There is a line the scene that I think really sums up the way that we (as in humanity in general) can treat people who are a little different to ourselves.

Luna : They’re called Thestrals. They’re quite gentle, really. But people avoid them because they’re a bit…
Harry :.. Different.

I always thought that Luna was talking about herself rather than the Thestrals here, and maybe Harry was too!

Fun Fact : Did you know that the core of The Elder Wand is Thestral tail hair? It is described as a tricky substance that can be mastered only by a witch or a wizard capable of facing death!

What is your favourite magical creature from the Harry Potter Series?

Day 27: What Is Your Favourite Spell? #30DaysHarryPotter

What is your favourite spell?

14509402_10209189548309086_1360457383_nToday we are thinking about our favourite spells from Harry Potter. I have quite a few favourites, but the one I have picked is ‘Lumos’! How handy would it be to be able to switch on a light whenever you needed without having to get up – like when you are all comfy on the couch, but you want to turn on the light. Then of course, with Lumos comes Nox to turn the light out! This would be great for those times when you get into bed without turning off the light! Who wants to have to get back out of bed, especially in the winter!!

Today, I spent a little while making my very own Lumos and Nox Spell Bottles, and I have a little tutorial up on You Tube as well for you to make your own version!

Day 26: What Job Would You Want in The Wizarding World? #30DaysHarryPotter

What Job Would You Want in The Wizarding World?

The prompt for today is all about what job you would have if you lived in the Wizarding World! This was a tough one for me, it really was. I kept on changing my mind. Would I like to teach potions at Hogwarts? Be a star Quidditch player? Chase down rogue wizards as an Auror? There are so many different jobs that sound pretty fun. However, I think the one that I would really like most of all would be to be the editor in chief at The Daily Prophet!

dpdumbledoreskeeter2It might be a bit of a controversial one, since The Daily Prophet went way down hill and started reporting lies and then we have Rita Skeeter who is not exactly the model of journalistic integrity! However, that’s something that I would have done differently. I love to write and it has always been my dream to be a journalist. I would have made sure that The Daily Prophet remained impartial at all times!

What job would you have if you lived in the Wizarding World?

Day 20 – 25: Catching Up On Harry Potter! #30DaysHarryPotter

Catching Up With 30 Days of Harry Potter!

I’ve been a bad blogger this past week. I ended up getting really sick and it took all that I could muster to get even a little bit of my work done, never mind blogging! I thought that instead of back dating all of the posts that I missed I would just cheat can pull them all together in one post so that I can get back on track as of Monday!

Day 20 : Which Harry Potter Character Would You Resurrect From The Dead?

If I was able to resurrect just one character who died in the series then I would have to choose Dobby! You all thought that I was going to say Snape, didn’t you! Well, the reason I didn’t choose Snape is that I felt his death did serve a purpose and in a way, he was suffering without his Lily anyway! However, for me Dobby the House elf was a senseless death, but then again that was probably the point! He was an innocent creature who was caught in the crossfire.

Day 21 : You Made Me Cry!

The prompt for day 21 is to name the 3 moments that made you cry throughout the series. Here are mine – very briefly as they are all things that I have commented on in other posts!

  1. Dobby’s Death
  2. Hermoine Using Obliviate on Her Parents
  3. Sirius Black’s Death

Day 22 : Which Scene Do You Wish Was In The Movies That Wasn’t?

Day 23 : Were You Satisfied By The Epilogue?

Yes. Yes, I was! I thought that the epilogue did tie things up just fine and that is one of the reasons why I have not yet read The Cursed Child! I’m not ready to get back into the Wizard World! I would have loved if JK Rowling would bring out books about the original Order of the Phoenix. It would be great to read more about James and Lily and all of the others when they were at Hogwarts!

Day 24 : Which of The Hallows Would You Choose to Own?

i accidentally answered this in a previous post about Hallows versus Horcruxes, so just briefly here I will say that I rather sensibly chose the invisibility cloak. However, I have a confession – I actually own a replica Elder Wand!

Day 25 : Who Would Be Your Hogwarts Nemesis?

Since I am a Slytherin, I have to say my nemesis is very likely to have been Harry Potter! However, I actually can see myself having some pretty big face offs against Dolores Umbridge or maybe even Rita Skeeter!

So that is me all caught up and ready to get back into those daily posts again as of Day 26! We are in the home stretch now and some exciting things are coming!

Day 19: If you could meet one member of the cast, who would it be? #30DaysHarryPotter

If You Could Meet One Member of The Harry Potter Cast, Who Would It Be?

One of the things that makes the movie adaptations of the Harry Potter books work as well as they do is the fact that the casting is so perfect! I just think that every single person that was cast did an amazing job of bringing their character to life, so picking out one cast member that I would love to meet is actually pretty tough since I genuinely admire all of them! My first choice would probably have been Alan Rickman aka Severus Snape because I truly think that he is the star of the series. However, as I said the other day I do feel like I am almost turning this into 30 Days of Severus Snape so I am going to resist the urge to do yet another Snape based post and go with my second choice of Helena Bonham Carter!

Helena Bonham Carter is one of my favourite actresses. Not only do I love her as Bellatrix LeStrange in the Harry Potter series, but she also appears in a ton of my other favourite movies such as Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Les Miserables and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I have always admired her as an actress and have often said that I would want her to play me if anyone ever made a movie about my life!

I also think she just seems like an all round cool girl and I love her sense of style, so I would definitely enjoy the opportunity to hang out with her some time!

What about you? Which member of the Harry Potter cast would you choose to hang out with if you could?

Day 18: Do You Prefer The Books or The Movies? #30DaysHarryPotter

Do You Prefer The Books or The Movies?

I am a huge bookworm so for me, the choice will always be simple… books! Don’t get me wrong… I love the movies I really do. They are always my comfort zone when I just want to snuggle up with the dog and my blanket. I think the casting is fabulous and they really bring the stories to life.

However, the books are something so special. I was late to the Harry Potter craze. I read books 1 to 4 in the fortnight before 5 came out and was then in line at midnight for the next one! The books are by no means a literary masterpiece, I studied the philosophers stone as part of my Literature degree and as much as I did love the story I did have to pick it apart. However, that was with my critical hat on. As a reader though I can quite happily just lose myself in the wizard world.

As is usually the case, the books had to cut out and change a great deal otherwise the movies would have had to be about 12 hours long. Me personally, I do not see a problem with that, but some people would! Anyway, the point is that the books have so many other layers to them that the movies barely scratch the surface of, so the books will always come out on top for me.

Day 17: What Would Your Wand Be Made Of? #30DaysHarryPotter

What Would Your Wand Be Made Of?

As you probably know, wands have personalities of their own and they very much choose their wizard. A great deal of this personality comes from the materials that they are made from, so today’s prompt is all about what your wand would be made from.

I have actually spent some time looking into the various components and what they mean. My actual wand that I use is made to look like The Elder Wand, but only in looks. I believe that the actual wood is Yew. I also have a prop wand which is a replica of Bellatrix Le Strange’s Walnut wand. So it probably stands to reason that my wand would be made from one of those two woods. After researching wand wood on Pottermore what each of the woods symbolises. I have decided that my wand would be best made from Yew.

Yew wands are among the rarer kinds, and their ideal matches are likewise unusual, and occasionally notorious. The wand of yew is reputed to endow its possessor with the power of life and death, which might, of course, be said of all wands; and yet yew retains a particularly dark and fearsome reputation in the spheres of duelling and all curses. However, it is untrue to say (as those unlearned in wandlore often do) that those who use yew wands are more likely to be attracted to the Dark Arts than another. The witch or wizard best suited to a yew wand might equally prove a fierce protector of others. Wands hewn from these most long-lived trees have been found in the possession of heroes quite as often as of villains. Where wizards have been buried with wands of yew, the wand generally sprouts into a tree guarding the dead owner’s grave. What is certain, in my experience, is that the yew wand never chooses either a mediocre or a timid owner.

– Pottermore

As for the core of my wand, well that is a little bit more  difficult to decide. I took a number of quizzes online and the one core that kept on coming up was Veela Hair. This is certainly a very rare core which I like the idea of. To date, Fleur Delacour is the only known user of a Veela Hair core wand! So I decided to look into the meaning of such a wand and this is what I found.

Veela wands are temperamental like the creatures they come from, and are considered too volatile for a decent wand core in many circles. However, some wizards, particularly those with Veela blood, enjoy the boost it gives to outdoorsy magics, divination, and Charms. The Veela’s inherent intelligence makes finding these wands among the non-Veela blooded most common in Ravenclaw.

I’m not a Ravenclaw and I doubt that I would have Veela blood, but I can connect with the outdoors magic and the link with divination. Sure it is a volatile core, but I am a little volatile myself!

So, overall I believe that my wand would be a 9 & 3/4 inches, yew with a Veela hair core!

What sort of wand would yours be?

Day 16: Who is Your Favourite Professor? #30DaysHarryPotter

Who is Your Favourite Hogwarts Professor?

I am sort of starting to feel a little bit like a broken record with the Snape is awesome thing! I already covered his character a couple of times so this time I will just say this…. Professor Snape is my favourite Hogwarts professor and then I will leave you with a little freebie in the form of a Snape inspired planner sticker printable. It is sized for Happy Planner (classic size) but the width should fit an Erin Condren, they will just be a little longer. You can download the pdf HERE or by clicking on the image below.
